Bears in the Window 2

As well as the days that come round every year, in recent years, I’ve also marked some momentous milestones like the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War Two, the 40th anniversary of man landing on the moon and the Inauguration of Barack Obama and several extra-special royal occasions like the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, her Diamond Wedding and her 80th birthday. There have also been lots of other one-off occasions to celebrate like the launch of a new Harry Potter book, the WWF’s Pandamonium exhibition in Selfridges, Snoopy’s 60th birthday, London’s Elephant Parade, when a herd of 258 painted elephants took to the capital’s streets, and the birth of the first baby panda at Washington’s National Zoo in 2005. In 2010, the bears were even caught up with the General Election when each of the main parties was represented.

Last year, some major occasions were celebrated for the first time – namely, London Fashion Week, the Oscars (or the Bearscars as the bears call them), the Chelsea Flower Show and Ayr Gold Cup. Television wasn’t forgotten either as some of the bears took to the dance floor in their version of Strictly Come Dancing. Two events of historic importance were also given an ursine makeover - the Queen’s visit to Ireland, the first time a British monarch had visited the country since it gained independence, and the state visit to London of Barack Obama. However, for many, the event of the year had to be the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton when all four windows were dedicated to this very special day.
